Coastal erosion is a natural phenomenon observed on many islands in the Maldives. Erosion is clearly visible along Addu's shoreline and will accelerate in the next few decades as a result of climate change.
Coastal flooding can be considered as the most frequent natural hazards that occur in Maldives. Unfortunately, this hazard will also be more frequent in the Maldives in the future. This is mainly due to the extremely low elevation of all Maldivian islands above sea level combined with the sea level rise due to climate change.
The Government has decided to take action to protect Addu inhabitant, by creating new resilient land.
Another reason for the project from Ministry of National Planning Housing and Infrastructure is to create new land to facilitate the development of the Addu City. The project is meant to address climate change and to transform Addu City into a fully functional, thriving economic hub and an attractive tourist destination.
Under this project, lands created have been zoned for residential, tourism and long-term commercial developments. Additionally, the new link road will facilitate the development of Hankede as a eco-tourism hub in Addu Atoll.
Addu Atoll hosts a wide variety of valuable ecosystems. Protection of the environment is a key concern
for the Project and environmental and social management will be integrated into all project activities.
Part of the project scope is the relocation of coral colonies prior to construction activities. Regular and site specific environmental monitoring will also be performed during all Project stages.
